Haemolytic anaemia in a child receiving nitrofurantoin.

چکیده
In 1956, West and Zimmerman reported a 'first case' of haemolytic anaemia, apparently caused by the use of nitrofurantoin (Furadantin). Since then, no further reports of this untoward effect of the drug have appeared in the literature. Recently a case of acute pyelonephritis treated with Furadantin, observed in the Paediatric Department of the Poriah Government Hospital in Tiberias, developed severe haemolytic anaemia when given this drug. Nitrofurantoin and peripheral neuropathy with megaloblastic anaemia.
Nitrofurantoin is a synthetic antibacterial drug derived from furan by the addition of a nitro group and a side chain containing hydantoin (Fig. 1). It has a bacteriostatic, and, in higher concentration, a bactericidal, action on a wide range of Grampositive and Gram-negative organisms. It is widely used in the treatment of urinary tract infections. Common complications caused by the drug are a...
متن کاملAcute haemolytic anaemia due to IgM penicillin antibody in a 3-year-old child: a sequel to oral penicillin.
A hitherto undescribed form of immune haemolytic anaemia due to penicillin antibody is described. The antibody, which was of the IgM class, fixed complement and caused acute haemolysis. Oral penicillin seems to have been responsible both for antibody production and, on subsequent exposure, for the haemolytic anaemia.
متن کاملPenicillin-induced haemolytic anaemia.
The case histories of two patients with penicillin-induced haemolytic anaemia are presented. One had received 20 mega units a day for 18 days, the other had received 20 mega units a day for two days and then 12 mega units a day for 25 days, before the haemolytic anaemia was diagnosed. Both had previously had courses of penicillin. A strongly positive direct antiglobulin reaction which appeared ...
متن کاملAutoimmune haemolytic anaemia and mefenamic acid therapy.
Three patients developed autoimmune haemolytic anaemia while being treated with mefenamic acid. In each case the autoimmune haemolytic anaemia was of the warm antibody gammaG type, and the antibodies had some rhesus specificity. All three patients recovered when the drug was withdrawn.Attempts to inhibit or enhance the activity of the antibody in vitro were unsuccessful.Direct antihuman globuli...
متن کاملAcute acquired haemolytic anaemia associated with polyagglutination.
Polyagglutination is an abnormality of red cells so that they are aggulutinated by most normal sera, except that from very young infants. Polyagglutination occurs in red cells which have been infected in vitro. Rarely it occurs in vivo, when it has usually been associated with severe bacterial infection. There are very few reported cases where polyagglutinability has led to increased red cell d...
